What is Emotional intelligence? (EQ)

Emotional intelligence is the ability to read, understand and regulate your own and others feelings. It can also sometimes be quoted as EQ which stands for emotional quotient.

Organizational psychologists are finding that leaders must have the ability to understand social interactions and solve the complex social problems that arise in the course of office life.  From resolving disputes to negotiating high-powered deals, business leaders need to be able to read each other’s signals, as well as understand their own strengths and weaknesses.’

And it’s not just subject to leaders being able to show emotional intelligence, it is required from leaders to workers, workers to co-workers, businesses to consumers online and offline and so forth.

Often seen as a soft skill it is vital in personal and professional success and that of the connection with consumers.

Studies show that leaders who have higher levels of emotional intelligence are also more likely to be profitable. This is certainly the case for some of the world’s best known CEOs. Jeff Bezos of Amazon for example is known to be obsessed with getting into the hearts and minds of Amazon customers. He openly discussed this on YouTube when he was announcing Amazon’s acquisition of Zappos in 2009. Howard Schultz of Starbucks is well known to love the company and its people. He shows this by offering his employees generous healthcare benefits. He is said to attribute this to the fact that his father lost his health insurance when Schultz was a child.’

Our presence within any business, company or brand is greater than our one being. It is as a collective and that of a collective and use of collective intelligence that is the driving force for success when used in a carefully constructed marketing strategy to impact and connect with and influence consumers.
